Interview with Remix Contest Winners: Sam Ourt & Unregular

We wanted to take a moment to learn more about our winners of the WildVibes & Martin Miller – Far From You Remix Competition: Sam Ourt & Unregular!

What were some of your inspirations that got you into making music in the first place?

Sam Ourt: I’ve been into the music since I was a baby when my parents introduced me to the art. I used to play several instruments and eventually I started producing my own music when I was thirteen. My goal was to combine them all together in EDM and so I started uploading that music on Soundcloud. Honestly, it was pretty bad quality stuff, but I didn’t give up on it. I think the hardest thing for me at first was not getting any support for my music. I just tried to stay positive and keep growing mentally and musically. Now here I am!

Unregular: I started off as a DJ when I was fourteen. However, I realized that I couldn’t become a big DJ unless I produced, so I started my production journey when I was fifteen. I don’t feel like a talented producer, but I do what I love, and I make what I like to make. Looking back over my evolution over the years, I have definitely had my ups and downs. There were times I wanted to quit this industry but where I’m at right now, I feel like I can try to succeed in this industry and maybe grow even more.

How did you two meet and decide to enter the remix competition together?

S: I really like the way Simon works because he is always so organized with everything and works hard for his goals which really motivates me. He is a good friend of mine and one of the best deep house producers I know. For the remix, we both loved the original track so when Simon sent over a little idea to me, we just went for it!

U: I’ve known Sam for over a year now and he’s the best producer I ever got in touch with. He is so talented and together, we make a great team. So, for this remix I messaged him a small idea and he helped make a track around it. We both poured our emotions to it and I feel like it worked out well.

What was your process for adding your own spin on the original track?

S: Our styles works really good together because we always try to turn our feelings into our music. I think that’s what makes our tracks unique, because you’re listening to what we felt in that moment.

U: Like Sam said, we both tried to add as much emotion in our version of the track as possible. We worked to find a fitting sound for this amazing track and especially for the emotional vocals. At the start of the process, I actually had a voice memo of myself with an inspirational quote at the beginning of the track, but I ended up deleting it later on.

Sam, how do you go about promoting your tracks on Soundcloud and Spotify? What advice would you give to other producers who are looking to gain more exposure for their tracks?

Well, basically there’s not tricks or shortcuts, just hard work and good music. The people will listen to your music and if you’re consistently putting out tracks and promoting them properly on social media. You’ve got to have a real network starting with your family and friends. Then branch out and start sending your tracks to YouTube channels and other artists. In the end, I think that consistency is the key, not just trying to get a lot of plays on one of your releases.

Unregular, what were some of your most memorable moments while playing out live this past year?

I usually don’t like playing my tracks when I’m performing, but I played this track for a small crowd at one of my residencies it gave me an amazing feeling to see everyone moving along to my music. Better yet, one of my producer friends played it out for a big club. I got instant goosebumps when he sent me the clips. It just meant so much to see other people digging my music.

How did you react when you found out you both won the competition? What sort of collaboration do you have in mind with Wildvibes?

S: I was traveling at that moment with bad internet connection, and when Unregular told me we won, I couldn’t believe it! It was really exciting for me since this was my first official remix and I’m a huge admirer of Wildvibes as well!

U: It was exciting for me as well because I’ve always wanted to win a competition. I’m also really looking forward to collabing with Wildvibes, I hope we can make an emotional deep house pop vibe track together.

Where are you both planning on taking your respective projects in 2019?

S: All I can say is the best is yet to come! So music is coming out in the couple months so keep an eye on my socials for all the latest updates!

U: Some really dope music is coming in 2019 and I might also release some hip-hop beats as well, stay tuned!
