EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Felipe Moya

Hey,

Hiiiii!

Who are you? (Tell us more about what you do in life, where you live, your age, your real name, what elements could define you, …)

Felipe Moya Alvarado, a young 22-year-old pianist, DJ/producer born in San José, Costa Rica. When not performing, I spend my time in the studio creating my own music. Due to the great influence music has in my life, I learned to play the piano on my own and have been playing it for over a decade.

DJing special events and promoting my own shows, I have had a lot of time to develop my sound.  For me, it’s all about mood and a deep, hypnotic groove, playing those tracks that get you tapping your feet and nodding your head without you realizing it, regardless of genre, tempo, style, or release date.  Don’t be surprised when you suddenly find yourself dancing.

When did you start producing music?

This journey started when I was 14 years old.

How did it all start for you?

A friend (Mauricio Hernandez) taught me everything about electronic music and from there I fell in love with this genre.

Which style(s) of music are you currently producing?

My genre is like a combination of deep house, future house, and future bass, always making the song super emotional.

Why did you choose it/them?

My idea with my music is to always look for something original.

Why are you producing music? And more globally, what does “music” mean to you?

I produce music to relax when I have a problem or I am stressed with a situation. Music for me is love looking for words. I see music as fluid architecture that can change the world because it can change people.

Where do you get your inspiration?

That depends on my mood, I always relate my songs to everything that is happening in my life at that moment.

What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?

Believe it or not, my favorite genre is indie rock. My favorite band is The Killers and if I had to spend the rest of my life listening to a song I would choose Shot At The Night by The Killers.

According to you, what is the best way to develop a business in the music industry?

Stay humble, respect comes from both sides, be open-minded, and do not give so much importance to fame and money. Just enjoy what you do.

What has been your favorite gig (show) so far?

I have not yet had the opportunity to be able to play in a show, but as a spectator, I would say that the Killers concert here in Costa Rica. Yes, sorry, I am a huge fan hahaha.

Do you live from your musical activities? If not, do you plan to make a living from music in the future?

Well, I am an Industrial and Statistical Engineer, I use music mostly as a hobby. At the moment I have no plans to make a living from music.

Do you have stuff in preparation, future collaborations, or personal projects?

This year many new things are coming, too many collaborations that I hope to release soon 🙂

And for the producers out there:

In what Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) are you currently working? And why that one?

I use FL Studio 20, very easy to work with.

On average, how much time do you spend in the studio on a typical day or week?

Sometimes I can sit for a whole day and sometimes I don’t produce anything for several days.

Do you have any technical tips to share with us (composition, sound design, mixing, mastering, or anything else…)?

Don’t be afraid to experiment and make something new. There is always someone who will like it

Let’s talk “Floating Through Space”

What was your inspiration for this mix?

I had no inspiration, what I did was choose songs that make us want to dance.

How fast did the mix come together?

It took two days, one choosing the music and the second making the mix!

What is the story behind this mix?

Honestly, it doesn’t have any story, I just wanted to make you have a good time with the music.

Finally:

Any important people in your life you wanna mention, thank, or talk about?

My friends of NILDS Production Center are my mentors on this journey and of course to my girlfriend who is always there to support me whatever the situation.

Thank you very much for your time!

Rather thank you for this super opportunity!
