Interview with Venezuelan Producers: J-Marin & Sublimals

How did you get into the world of production?

J-Marin: It was around five years ago that I started playing around with FL Studio, but I honestly can’t even remember it clearly! I got my inspirations from some of the big names like Hardwell, Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia among others. It started as a hobby but now it’s my work and part of my life.

Subliminals:  For us, we started producing three years ago. We always like the genre and we were watching and listening to people like Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and Tiesto and we asked ourselves why we couldn’t be doing stuff like that. So we decided to make our move and enter onto the scene!

J-Marin, your style has been a lot brighter and on the Future Bass side of the spectrum. How did you come to recognize that this was the style of music you wanted to make?

J: I tried my hand at quite a few genres and styles before doing Future Bass & Trap, but in the past year, I’ve just been really inspired from artists like Illenium, San Holo, and Swedish House Mafia which is probably why my sound is the way it is.

Subliminals, you’ve been making Big Room with some of the biggest names on Soundcloud for the past year or so. What inspired you to break away from Big Room for this release?

S: Yeah, we’ve never made something like this before! We just liked the genre and we knew how J-Marin works so we reached out and the rest is history!

This track is really a fantastic collaboration which seems to infuse Subliminals’ dark energy into J-Marin’s tempo range and sound design. Tell us more about how this track came together and how the two of you worked on it.

S: That was the night that J-Marin came to our house and we were just talking about trap music and stuff. We eventually were inspired to crack open FL Studio and we started to make some simple beats to jam out to. We really liked one of them so J-Marin worked on the sound design, we perfected the arrangement and we put the finishing touches on the track together

J: Yeah! The idea for this track came to us after hours at the “SubliStudio.” We wanted to make something powerful and energic and I think we did it!

How did you guys first meet? What is it like to hang out with you all?

S: We met in a group for Venezuelan producers about a year ago. Since then we’ve been sending our IDs back and forth to get feedback and now we’re really good friends! Nowadays we joke around together and play a bit of Fortnite now and then!

This one goes to J-Marin: tell us about how you got your track uploaded to the very popular Trap Nation YouTube channel.

J: My track, “Worth It” was signed with Lowly Palace which is Trap Nation’s label in case you didn’t know. Trap Nation just liked it and wanted to upload. Since the track is released on their label, they have all the permissions on paper to do that. Hopefully it won’t be the last time I pop up on there!

Subliminals, what have been some of your favorite moments when you were up on stage?

S: Well, we’ve only been playing on stage for about a year ago but it was an amazing experience for us! We just had a blast working off the energy of the crowd and the venue as a whole!

You both offer ghost production services. How do you feel about this practice as a whole and how has it benefited you personally?

J: Ghost production is one of first options for making money from music production when you are starting your career. We all need to eat, you know? The downside is that it takes valuable time that you could be using for your own stuff.

S: Well in Venezuela, if you don’t make money in US Dollars, it’s really hard to live a comfortable life here. We actually don’t really like doing that kind of work but it’s helping us get by right now; if we were living in another country, we wouldn’t be doing it.

Where are you guys looking to go next with your respective careers? Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

J: Hard work always pays off! I’m sure that if continue working every day and keep dropping new tracks, I’ll be on my way to getting my music on all the big labels and playing at the biggest festivals!

S: We’ve definitely got a lot of projects on our plate but our first goal is to get out of Venezuela! Maybe in five years we will have our studio, playing in big festivals, and teaching young producers how to make it in this business!
