I didn’t know what to think when I first started seeing the headlines that came out on Friday. At first I thought it was some sort of sick joke or fake news. A lot of people were aware of the health issues that Avicii had suffered over the last few years, but it was hard to accept that someone seemingly so full of life and energy could be there one day and gone the next. With all the tributes, pictures, posts, and conversations going on over the last few days, it’s obvious that he profoundly impacted many people on a very deep level. Ten years ago, no one would ever have imagined that a DJ from what was then a niche genre could rise to a position of being an inspiration to millions of people around the world. Avicii helped bring Electronic Dance Music onto the airways which opened the door for dance music to spread like wildfire across the globe.
Of course he wasn’t just a DJ; he was an artist, songwriter, and composer who reminded the world of the creative potential that one single person could hold within their heart. The amazing thing about Avicii was that he rose to the celebrity level of super-stardom with such grace and humility. He frequently stated that his love was always in the music and not in the fame or attention as he said in his open retirement letter, “My choices and career have never been driven by material things.” This was exactly the type of role model the world needed in order to start taking dance music seriously and giving it the respect that it deserved.
