Hey,
Hey, hey Fam!
Who are you? (Tell us more about what you do in life, where you live, your age, your real name, what elements could define you, …)
My name is Anthony Carpio, known as TOMc. I am from a small country called Ecuador, specifically Riobamba City. I’m 25 years old and I’ve been a DJ since I was 13 years old, I’m also a nurse, an English teacher, and a graphic designer, I work most of the time as a nurse, visiting and helping people with covid-19 to recover, and in my free time, I produce music or create flyers, designs for clients, videos, etc. I try to be on schedule most of the time.
I’m proud to say that I love to help people. I love to make people happy and with my music, I can touch them even more! I’m glad to be multifaceted.
What’s the meaning behind your artistic name?
It’s kind of weird, hahaha. Since I was a kid, my family called me many different ways because I have 3 names lol (Anthony Miguel Angel). Some of then called me Tony, others Mike, and Angel, but creating TOMc, I was looking for something catchy and fresh, something referring to my real name so I combined them, and boom! TOMc was born! And since then I’ve been working on it, as a real artist! 😀
When did you start producing music?
I’ve been producing 7 years ago. I had the chance to get out of my country to work and study music production, I had the chance to learn from Jake Combie (Prophet) at Salt Lake City Music Production (SLDP), then I took some personal courses from the hand of Mike Pitluk (Wyld Card Records), and David Ordonez (Mother recordings – Saved). I try to be updating myself every time I can.
How did it all start for you?
It all happened when I got back to Ecuador. That was a crucial point in my career because I got my style from the US, so I had original and fresh stuff to share with my people. They love such a bassy taste. I took advantage of this and I started networking, going to local parties, DJing at my friends’ houses, producing with local talent as well. These baby steps help a lot in the future…
Which style(s) of music are you currently producing?
I produce a lot of bassy stuff, from tech house to WareHouse, deep house, and a little bit of deep tech as well. And for my personal repertory I produce melodic deep progressive. I like to create different kinds of ambients and atmospheres.
Why did you choose it/them?
When I was a kid, my older cousins introduced me to hip hop, rap, reggae, salsa… the Latin flavor of course lol … but when I traveled to the US, I heard from the first time bass house & Ghouse, so it was there when I fell in love with the electric melody and such heavy bass.
Why are you producing music? And more globally, what does “music” mean to you?
Simple! I love to make people happy, and my music is the key to helping myself and others to deal with their problems at least for a night! DJing and raving, I think, is one of the most powerful tools that fills those empty spaces…. I simply love it!!!
Where do you get your inspiration?
Most of the time from the new jack swing stuff, I also like to hear some melodic dubstep, older classic hip hop, and some good and fresh music that comes out every day.
What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?
For me, I guess it could be Empty Streets by Late Night Alumni!! I love that track a lot and of course, the old classics from Bob Sinclair, like World hold on!
According to you, what is the best way to develop a business in the music industry?
Networking! Partying a lot! Invest your time with the right people and schedule your time!
And learn another language!
What has been your favorite gig (show) so far?
It was when I used to play at an underground club called Vortex, it used to get packed! I will never forget how much fun people got there! Everyone was so wild and free hahaha.
Do you live from your musical activities? If not, do you plan to make a living from music in the future?
I used to work as a dental assistant and I quit it! And since then I think and believe that I made the right decision. Everything has been much better since then….. I work at my 25 years old on my own, without a boss and that feels so so good! I’m so thankful to be so active with many skills to share with others, to serve others, or even help them! Of course, when I made this decision, I promised myself that I will work as much as it will cost to get where I want to be! I’m ready for the future!
Do you have stuff in preparation, future collaborations, or personal projects?
I have some good stuff to be released, I take my time to find the right and perfect idea rather than creating just random stuff. If I create something it has to be powerful, it must have a message.
And for the producers out there:
In what Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) are you currently working? And why that one?
I got the chance to take a course and study and learn everything about Ableton Live. I chose Ableton because it is so fast, so dynamic and with many tools that you always keep learning, also I like how it looks and the workflow it has.
On average, how much time do you spend in the studio on a typical day or week?
3 to 4 hours in the mornings and the same amount on the afternoons, of course it is not always like this. I have to find the time when I have new clients, students or patients. Everything runs around that and my personal occupations.
Do you have any technical tips to share with us (composition, sound design, mixing, mastering, or anything else…)?
Less is more, if something sounds good it sounds good. Just use EQ, play with volume, panning and that’s it! Nothing too fancy. It’s all about choosing the right elements!
Let’s talk about “Different is Beautiful”
What was your inspiration for this mix?
I practice my DJ skills every single weekend and I always like to play music according to my vibes and people’s vibes… Every time I play, it is a unique and different DJ mix, I play randomly and I’m good at it! I know my stuff a lot, I practice with my tracks before mixing at shows or any DJ mix that I have the opportunity to play at… sometimes I use camelot system and others I just run with the vibes of the place, I consider myself a dynamic DJ!
How fast did the mix come together?
I recorded myself one afternoon and it took me like 1 hour to choose some tracks and then hit the play button. I just need to be in the mood and feel the music and I keep mixing and mixing tracks together.
What is the story behind this mix?
I wanted to share my best skills at mixing and of course share with you a bad ass bassy set! As I’ve been saying, I love making people happy and sharing good, fresh and classy stuff is one of my main goals! Music was made to be shared with every human being.
Finally:
